The Sennheiser RS170 Digital Wireless Headphone System is a recent release from the Sennheiser company. Sennheiser is one of the better brand names when it comes to headphones, in particular wireless or cordless headphones and headsets. They have a reputation for producing good looking headphones that deliver excellent sound reproduction and robust functionality.

The RS170 is ideal for listening to music remotely. The manufacturers claim that the headphones will function well up to 260 feet away. They should even function through walls or outside. To this extent, reports suggest that they do function in this way but the range might not be as long as 260 ft.

Other uses include watching TV without disturbing a partner or other occupants of the home. This can be handy if you live in a high density accommodation, like apartment blocks, and crave a bit of privacy. It can also be useful for late  night TV or movie watching when your spouse/partner is asleep next to you.

The headphones themselves are light so you could even do exercise whilst wearing them. The fit is fairly snug but I wouldn’t recommend too strenuous exercise as the headphones may get dislodged and fall off.

The RS170 has a modern looking design to previous RS model headphones. It comes in a mat black finish. The headphones and earcups are designed for maximum comfort. They are padded and fit comfortably around the ear for extended periods of use. The head band is also padded and adjustable.

Again, like previous models, the RS 170 uses radio frequency (RF) Kleer technology for wireless functionality. It is a truly digital system, with the transmission frequency range over 2.4 to 2.8 GHz. This minimizes the chances of interference when listening. A common problem with previous RF transmitters was a slight hissing sound in the ears when using the system. This should not occur with the Sennheiser RS170 Digital Wireless Headphone System.

Other features of the system :

The sound quality is reported to be excellent with Dynamic Bass Boost. Delivers crisp, clear sound and deep, booming bass when needed.

The transmitter doubles as a recharging device (standard with most Sennheiser headphones). Place the headphones on top of the transmitter after using to ensure that they are always ready for action next time they are needed.

These are headphones with volume control functionality. The volume and other controls such as surround sound and bass boost are located on the right earcup. They are distinct buttons that need to be pressed to activate. This is slightly different to previous models of Sennheiser RF wireless headphones that used a wheel mechanism.

Summary : Comfortable fit for long use. Excellent sound quality with no perceptible interference even through walls. Good range. Modern design. Quite expensive.
